The "Fat Josh" Years |
(Note: I am reviewing this product based on the quality of the show over the first two seasons, not the format of the DVD release. "Best Of" DVD releases are usually just marketing gimmicks to make some money before the show is released in a seasonal format, but this is all we have for now).
These first two seasons (or at least selected episodes) of the hit Nickelodeon TV series "Drake and Josh" have their moments, but by and large they do not strike the comedy gold of the latter two seasons.
The biggest reason? The acting of Josh Peck. The entire "Drake and Josh" show was likely conceived around the old Laurel and Hardy concept, where the fat, unlucky, flustered guy (Hardy/Josh) is always at odds with the skinny, charmed, yet utterly clueless guy (Laurel/Drake) even though, deep down, they really are best friends. This show just puts that tried and true formula into the high school children scenario. While at times it works like a charm and produces hilarious results, other times it kind of just falls flat (and the "falling flat" incidences are much higher in these first two seasons).
I think what happened is that it quickly became apparent that the emotional/physical comedy from Josh Peck was what really powered the show. However, being as "rotund" as he was those first couple of seasons, he was never quite able to capitalize fully on that physical style of comedy that quickly had become his trademark. Basically, the entire backbone of the shows rests on Josh's reaction to Drake's shenanigans, and in these earlier seasons it was just too easy to dismiss him as "the fat kid" (however mean that is).
Thus, I would advise viewers to steer-clear of episodes from the first two seasons of "Drake and Josh" and instead invest in seasons three and four, as that is when the show truly becomes hilarious. |

I Love Drake & Josh but disks aren't the greatest |

I Love Drake & Josh and I started watching it with my neice because she was watching it and now I love watching it all by myself. I have been waiting for all of the episodes to be released on dvd, so I was so excited when I found out it was being released. I gave only 4 stars out of 5 because I don't understand why the complete set wasnt released. This dvd set is very expensive for not having all of the episodes on them. If they were not going to release all of the episodes then I think they could have went down on the price. I also gave 4 out of 5 stars because the dvd seems cheaply made to me, when you go to pick different episodes you highlight which episode you want to go to and it highlights in a yellow color and sometimes with the glare of the tv I can hardly see which episode it is highlighting. Another problem I had was the dvd set is seasons 1 & 2, but on the 3rd disk in the set on the opening screen it is labeled wrong it says it is season 3 & 4 on the set that I received. All and all I love Drake & Josh so I guess I am happy that they released some of the episodes rather then none of the episodes. Although I will still be waiting on the complete set to be released. |

Disks won't play on all U.S. DVD players |

The shows are great, but these disks will not play on all U.S. DVD players, especially if they have any recording capabilities. It doesn't work on our Sony DVD/VHS combo recorder. I'm guessing this has to do with people making illegal copies, but it would hardly be profitable to copy these shows to a VHS tape and then back again to a DVD. Think of the quality it would produce. The editoral review does mention (wish I'd noticed this before) that the disks will only work in "play-only" DVD machines. Hope this isn't a trend with DVDs. |
